There are many people who have asthma and this can be a dangerous and debilitating condition. Treatment and close monitoring make the condition easy to live with. However, under certain circumstances or when certain conditions are encountered, an asthma attack can be triggered. Urgent help may be required to control the attack and sometimes, hospitalization is required to get the breathing into the correct rhythm again.

The working schedule of a respiratory therapist can be quite heavy and he or she can expect to be undertaking a range of different treatments of patients at any given time. Medical history taking, diagnosis and formulation of a treatment program are standard fare.

The respiratory therapist works with a number of different conditions ranging from mild monitoring to intensive care. They can also work across the whole gamut of ages too. The work is varied and is well paid. A fully trained respiratory therapist can earn anywhere from $40,000 upwards per annum.

Salary usually depends on experience and the type of medical establishment hiring you. Some prefer to work within communities and others have a hospital or medical center as a base. The salary will increase with experience. Additionally, further study will give extra responsibilities and with it will come an increase in salary too.
How to train as a respiratory therapist

Before attending a respiratory therapist school, it is essential to have high school qualifications. This ensures a certain degree of intelligence and skills, and prepares an individual for further study. A degree is required before working in the medical area of respiratory conditions can be considered. Degree level study can be demanding and requires a lot of planning and practical work. Further studies at respiratory therapist colleges will include basic nursing modules such as Anatomy, Chemistry, Microbiology and other key medical areas.

The road to being a respiratory therapist does not stop when the degree has been obtained from the respiratory therapist schools. Once the degree program has been completed then it is necessary to apply for the required certification and registration. The National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) is the regulatory body and they require that degree graduates complete additional study as well as complete an examination before they will grant the Certified Respiratory Therapist status.

Further study and completion of two extra examinations can be undertaken to obtain the title of Registered Respiratory Therapist. This additional status gives an advanced managerial role in the field. It is also required for working in a very sensitive medical area such as intensive care.

A respiratory therapist will start work in a general capacity and once experience has been acquired, a more defined or specialist role can be sought. Many people prefer to work with babies and children in the respiratory therapy area and this is a very competitive position that takes on highly trained and motivated staff.

All in all, this is a position to aspire for and it can be achieved in a relatively short time with dedication.
